Treating Illness Leads to Safer Communities
One of the biggest contributors to mass incarceration is the criminalization of illness. America is locking up people who suffer from diseases like substance use disorder and a variety of mental health conditions. Diseases that do have treatments - even if current policies make them very difficult to access while incarcerated. Diseases that we know are made far worse when they aren’t treated and especially when a person finds themselves in a hostile and traumatic environment. Across the country, there is a sea change in de-stigmatizing mental health conditions; we need that tide to continue rising throughout the criminal justice system.
