America is locking up people who suffer from diseases like substance use disorder and a variety of mental health conditions. Diseases that do have treatments - even if current policies make them very difficult to access while incarcerated. Diseases that we know are made far worse when they aren’t treated and especially when a person finds themselves in a hostile and traumatic environment. Across the country, there is a sea change in de-stigmatizing mental health conditions; we need that tide to continue rising throughout the criminal justice system.
